Perfect Storm!
The last two weeks brought with them a series of events that tested our strength and brought with it a perfect storm of life threatening conditions . Layla ended up with a blood transfusion, lots of scanning, testing, weekend hospital stay and unwanted additional findings.
Without elaborating on the details and still unclear on the cause and effects of the disease vs the treatment, Layla was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism and an autoimmune hepatitis that has caused a lot of symptoms mimicking liver failure. the extensive imaging led us to a lesion in her brain that had surprised us all and explained the cluster headaches that she was getting.
So where are we now with all of this?
We are thrilled that Layla’s liver is slowly recovering from the hepatitis . According to the imaging, the immunotherapy treatment in Vienna held the cancer stable in the liver. We are not sure how long she has had the lesion in the brain , the last brain MRI she had was in April of 2019.
we aborted immunotherapy treatment two weeks ago and started a course of high dose steroid and heparin shots to stabilize the liver and the embolism. The treatment is slow as we have to take into account her current blood parameters. She has been in a lot of pain and discomfort and the team here is on top of all of that and also making sure to reduce any swelling in the brain around the lesion.
We believe the lesion is treatable through targeted radiation. we are meeting tomorrow with neurosurgeons and radiologists to decide on the best option and are eager to start as soon as possible to get Layla to a stable condition and pursue another treatment.
Wes joined us for 10 days and spent most of his days taking care of us. He left today to finalize the sale of our house and our move which will happen this coming weekend. Nina is back here with us, taking a family leave till we get things under control again.
We have a long way to go . Layla has been a champ through all of this, tending to important things back at home and keeping a very positive attitude in spite of the constant pain that’s winding down with the ongoing treatment of the embolism and the hepatitis.
We are in excellent hands and have been reassured that each of these conditions is treatable on its own.
